A story I’ve heard from Nanjing, China makes me surprised—a patient with ESRD who are on hemodialysis for as long as 24 years! Unbelievable, isn’t it? Read on if you are interested in his story.
Mr. Song lives in Nanjing City and has suffered from chronic kidney disease (CKD) when he was 40 years old. His CKD is hard to be controlled and not long after that, he has ESRD and has to rely on HD to survive. Mr. went to hospital three times a week since then. “The dialysis lasts for 4 hours.” said the patient. “At that time, the dialysis machine was not advanced like now, so its complications were also hard to be controlled. My hemachrome was only 4g after dialysis. I have to lie on bed all looked pale and dark.”
The cost per year was 21,000 RMB before 1992 used to pay his hemodialysis. For his 24 years of HD, the total cost is as much as 1.27 million. Along with the development of science and technology, the quality of dialysis has improved significantly. And now, Mr. Song is 67 years old and still lives with excellent mental status.
Experience he wants to share with others
Taking control of water consumption and body weight are the most important thing HD patients need to do. If patients on HD fail to control their body weight, heart failure might develop as a result. Diet restriction helps him a lot all these years.
Mr. Song encourages other patients who are on hemodialysis that they should follow renal-friendly diet seriously and do as the doctors told. All these years, he was saved by renowned experts for several times. “I’m pretty lucky, not everyone could get chances like me. Others should hang in there, and don’t ever give up!”
