FSGS (Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis) is a common primary glomerular disease among adults and children and its histopathological characteristic is partially damaged glomeruli accompanied or not accompanied with formation and adherence of foam cell in glomerular capillary. FSGS progresses over time if no treatment is given and with the progression of illness, we may suffer from lots of symptoms. In the following, we mainly introduce 5 tell symptoms of FSGS.
1. Foamy urine or bubbly urine
FSGS is a problem regarding glomerulus which is a part of nephron, the major component of kidney. In kidney, glomerulus works as a filter and when blood flow through it, wastes will be filtered out and substances like protein are preserved in blood. However, for FSGS patients, their glomeruli are injured, and in such a case, large amounts of protein leak into urine and thus form proteinuria which is usually manifested as foamy urine or bubbly urine.
2. Edema or swelling
Edema is another visible symptom of FSGS and its appearance is always linked with proteinuria. For FSGS patients, when large amounts of protein leak into urine, plasma osmotic pressure drops severely and this can cause fluid retention directly.
3. Weight gain
FSGS patients may find their body weight increases over time and this usually occurs as a consequence of swelling. To remit this symptom, diuretics are helpful. However, while choosing diuretics, patients must be very careful about their potassium level, as some diuretics may cause severe low potassium level in blood.
4. Blood urine
Blood urine is clinically called hematuria which refers to the presence of excess red blood cells in urine. Clinical data shows over a half of FSGS patients have hematuria, but in most of the cases, it appears as microscopic hematuria. With the progression of FSGS, microscopic hematuria will change into gross hematuria which is visible. Therefore, appearance of gross hematuria always indicates serious kidney damages.
The above are the 4 telling symptoms of FSGS and in reality, aside from them, FSGS also can cause many other symptoms like tiredness, poor appetite, dizziness and so on. Usually, the more serious the FSGS is, the more serious these symptoms are. Therefore, effective treatment for kidney damages is the basic for FSGS patients to get all these symptoms alleviated radically.
