Honestly speaking, eating bananas has many benefits for healthy people. Bananas promote bowel health, lower blood pressure, maintain bone health, prevent cancer, enhance mood, help for weight loss and obesity, reduce cholesterol, protect eyesight, reduce risk of stroke etc.

But for dialysis people, they should avoid bananas. Bananas are known for their high potassium content, with over 400 mg potassium in a single medium-size banana. Though potassium is necessary for good nerve and muscle cells, including those in your heart, too much potassium in the blood will result in hyperkalemia. And then you may suffer from muscle fatigue, weakness, paralysis, abnormal heart rhythms, nausea etc.

Diet Guideline for people on dialysis

A diet guideline can help you measure whether certain food is suitable for you or not. And then you can make a wise decision by yourself.

-High quality protein intake. Because dialysis will take away part of protein, it is better for you to increase your protein intake to 1.2 g/ kg per day. High quality protein contains more essential amino-acid and produces less wastes, so egg white, milk, lean meat, fish are preferred.

-Enough calories. It is recommended to take in 35 kilocalories/ kg per day. Plant oil and saccharides are preferred than animal fat, chicken skin etc.

-Avoid high-potassium, high-sodium, high-phosphorus diet. It can increase burden on kidney and worsen state of illness.

-Supply vitamin. People on dialysis often suffer from vitamin deficiency, so you should supply vitamins through taking some fresh vegetables and fruit.
