-Fresh vegetables and fruits

They contain rich vitamins, which can protect you from various diseases. Such fruits include grapes, cranberries and blueberries; vegetables include fennel, onions, celery, beets, spinach, string beans and asparagus. But make sure the fruits and vegetables you eat are low in potassium.

-Sodium substitutes

Because your kidney can not function well to filter the sodium in the blood, it is recommended to reduce sodium intake. Sodium substitutes are low-sodium table salt alternatives which can circumvent the risk of edema, high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease, which are complications of kidney disease.

-Herbal teas

Herbal teas, such as dandelion root, nettle leaf, salvia, Chinese rhubarb, marshmallow root, bushu, can improve kidney function so as to increase GFR.

-High quality protein

Protein is necessary for your body, but high protein diets can increase burden on kidneys by producing a compound called urea. High urea will damage your kidney and make GFR decrease. So you should avoid high protein diet, such as red meat. But you can eat proper high quality protein, such as lean meat, egg white, milk, etc, which produces less wastes.

-Soy milk and cheese

You should take low-phosphorous diet. Because too much phosphorous may be more than your kidneys can handle and cause kidney failure. Dairy products contain a lot of phosphorous. Maybe you can substitute milk and cheese for versions made with soy, which will greatly reduce your phosphorous intake and may improve your overall kidney health so as to increase GFR.

What we drink and eat plays an important role in progression of kidney disease. Though some of them have not the function of increasing GFR, they can slow down its development. Therefore, you should follow a healthy diet.
